Excitement is around every turn at the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo, and a visit to the Ranch Rodeo will prove that you don’t have to be a rodeo professional in order to perform amazing rodeo acts. Teams of four compete in events such as bronco riding and wild cow milking for cash and prizes worth over $21,000. Or check out the Twisted Sisters Barrel Race, a free event taking place on February 5th that features fast-paced action by racers of all ages. The James Kjerstad Event Center’s schedule contains many of the action-packed events of the Stock Show that will make your jaw drop.

2. Watch the Coronation of Miss Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo

Local cowgirls will compete for the chance of being crowned 2018 Miss Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo on Saturday, January 27th. Contestants will be judged on their interview and speech skills, modeling, and horsemanship for the chance to win the crown. Coronation of the new queen will take place at the Stockman’s Banquet and Ball and is open to the public. Miss Black Hill Stock Show & Rodeo travels the state promoting South Dakota’s official state sport, rodeo. Don’t miss out on meeting this year’s contestants and seeing who will get the crown this year.

3. Enjoy Live Music

Check out the lively music scene during your visit to the Black Hills Stock Show. For some upbeat country music, join Texas singer/songwriter Aaron Watson, as well as the local Brandon Jones Band, on February 2nd at 7:00 p.m. during the Stock Show Stampede. The Boots and Beer Festival will also feature performances by Brandon Jones, as well as Zeona Road, a sibling country/rock band from South Dakota. Stomp your feet along to some rockin’ country music at this year’s Stock Show.

4. Visit the Boots and Beer Festival

Speaking of the Boots and Beer Festival, the popular shindig will return for its fourth year to provide Stock Show goers an evening of great, local beer and a dance floor to show your best moves. The festival will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, with their beer tasting beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets to the event are only $20 and include samples of premium South Dakota beer, as well as live music to kick your boots up to. 5. Purchase Unique Items to Take Home

From candles to cowboy boots, the Cinch Trade Show offers a little bit of something for everyone. Featuring 200 vendors, the show has two areas where shoppers can browse: the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and the Central States Fairgrounds, and will be open at 10:00 a.m. every morning from Friday, January 27th through Saturday, February 4th. A trip to the trade show is a must for a remarkable shopping experience where you can pick up one-of-a-kind souvenirs to take home.

6. Have a Great Time on a Small Budget

A visit to the Stock Show doesn’t have to put a huge dent in your wallet; there are plenty of free events available so you can take part in the fun on a reasonable budget. There is no cost to browse through Western art at the Bank West Western Art Show, where you can not only purchase a beautiful piece of art representative of this area, but also meet the person who created it. For the little ones, a free petting zoo featuring livestock animals and their offspring is open every day from 10am-6pm, with volunteers being on hand to answer any questions about the animals. A free night of music is also featured at the Stock Show, with the Rapid City cover band Brandon Jones and the Thirsty Fish entertaining the crowd with fun country covers.
