Experience The Black Hills

The Black Hills are home to many Memorial Day events during the holiday weekend, so join in on the festivities during your stay!

Memorial Day in the Black Hills

Every year on the last Monday of May, we dedicate a day to remembering and honoring the people that risked their lives for their country. Many people observe Memorial Day with taking time to visit memorials of those brave soldiers, and events and celebrations are held to bring the community together to join in on this special holiday. There are many unique celebrations taking place in the Black Hills during Memorial Day weekend, allowing you to join in on the festivities during your stay at Comfort Suites Rapid City.

Crazy Horse Memorial

The month of May kicks off the opening of many attractions, but the season launch at Crazy Horse Memorial is unlike any other – it includes a laser show on the side of the 500 foot monument! “Legends in Light” is presented at dark every night starting Friday, May 24th and running through September 29th. The show, honoring Native Americans, their culture and their contributions, utilizes three of the world’s largest slide projectors and a closed-loop ice-making system that cools the lasers, without drawing on valuable water resources. The all-weekend opening event being held from May 24th through May 27th also includes fantastic artwork made by Native American artists displayed in the Crazy Horse Memorial Welcome Center. Admission into the memorial is $12 per person, or $30 per car of more than two people. Crazy Horse is located 45 minutes from Comfort Suites, and is sure to leave you with a remarkable look into the South Dakota’s culture. Read more details about the event, as well as the season schedule for the daily laser show, here.

Sturgis Off-Road Rally

If you anxiously wait each year for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August, then this event is for you! On Saturday, May 25th and Sunday, May 26th, the Mayor's Ride/Social, Poker Run, Bigfoot Ride, Hash Ride, and the Show and Shine will take place, giving participants a day full of friendly competition and rides that wind through gorgeous Black Hills scenery. On Sunday, participants will enjoy a Memorial Day barbeque and concert at the Kickstand Campground just outside of Sturgis. If you want to bring along a passenger, it is $30 for an adult and children 12 years and under ride free! This is an all-day event and is located only 30 minutes away from the Comfort Suites, so bring your sunscreen and expect a full-filled Memorial Day weekend in the beautiful and historic town of Sturgis! Storybook Island Opening Day

Need a fun activity for the kids during Memorial Day weekend? Head over to Storybook Island, Rapid City’s beloved children’s park, for their much anticipated opening day of the season. On May 25th starting at 9 a.m., the park will open its doors to visitors to frolic among the many fairy tale sculptures, browse through the gift shop, ride the park’s train or carousel, and jump in the bippity-boppity bounce house. Entrance to the park is free, with tickets to partake in the special events being held during opening day only $2. Head to Storybook Island’s Facebook page and view the event to learn more.
