The Music Lover’s Guide to the Black Hills
Whether you prefer a night of local live music or a performance with a story, Rapid City has it all for you and your family to enjoy. Music is something that is loved by everybody. No matter if it’s theatrical, easy-going, or even a song that a stand-up comic wrote to make you laugh, you’re not thinking of being anywhere else when you’re sitting there in the audience. That feeling you get when the lead singer of your favorite band makes eye contact with you, or the lead actor/actress of your favorite play smiles at you is indescribable. If you can relate to any of those feelings, read on so you can find out where in Rapid City you can go to have a once in a lifetime experience!
Concerts and Local Live Music
There’s nothing better than local bands and singers, and with so many musicians here to love, you’d think we’d run out of new faces by now! But each year the numbers keep rising and new artists get introduced to the public. The following are just a few of the acts that will be joining in the holiday cheer by sharing their music with Rapid City during the month of December.
Being the only cigar bar in Rapid City, Tinder Box welcomes two artists, Nick Linn on December 1st, 7th, and 8th, and Sophia Beatty on the 21st and 22nd, with no cover charge. With both having jazz influences, they are sure to bring good vibes to the room. Our very own chorus group, Black Hills Showcase Chorus, will be putting on a mind blowing performance at South Canyon Lutheran Church on December 8th to kick off the holiday season. Tickets can be purchased here. Last but not least, the Rapid City music scene has to include Acapella of course! Tonic-Sol-Fa will be traveling to our very own Performing Arts Center on December 3rd to give us the gift of humor and soulful vocals. Tickets can be purchased here.
A good orchestra is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. The combination of the different instruments, wood wind, percussion, brass, and strings, is enough to turn a guitar player into a violinist. That is why our very own Black Hills Symphony Orchestra is a must-see. They will be performing their pieces Visions of Sugar Plums on the first day of December and Heroes & Villains on the last day of December to kick off the New Year in style. They will be putting on their shows at the Performing Arts Center, with tickets available here, so all ages can attend and enjoy the sound of our very own orchestra!
There are many things that take place in December to get excited about, and plays are definitely one of them. This year, there are a variety of performances like no other. So no matter what genre you’re into, there’s a good chance you will find something you like! Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker is coming to the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on December 4th, and just like the old story originating in the 1800’s, it is as breathtaking as ever. Tickets can be purchased here. The Performing Arts Center is also hosting a very interesting play, titled Law & Order Fairy Tale Unit, on December 7th, 8th, and 9th. It features fictional characters from our favorite nursery rhymes as criminal investigators. The famous criminal TV show turned fairy tale, who wouldn’t love that? Tickets can be purchased here. And lastly, a drama set in the dark 1800s titled The Doll’s House, Part Two is being held at the Firehouse Brewing Theater at the end of the month and continuing into the New Year. Tickets can be purchased here.
While you enjoy your stay at the Comfort Suites, why not go out and about and listen to some local music or see a play at one of our amazing venues? We hope that exploring our amazing city will make your stay even more enjoyable!
