Celebrate Fall in Rapid City

Football season has started, pumpkin spice has begun to make its appearance once again and the air holds the familiar smoky scent of late-night bonfires, which all can only mean one thing – fall is here. If you’re searching for some unique things to do in Rapid City, SD during your visit, look no further, as we have compiled some area celebrations that are sure to get you in the spirit of autumn!

Dinner with a Founder

Nothing says fall quite like a delicious, hearty meal, and on Thursday, September 20 at 5 p.m., you’ll have the exclusive opportunity to enjoy such decadent fare as elk burgundy, rosemary bread, roasted butter nut squash, chocolate custard pudding and stout ale while in the company of founding father John Adams. America’s Founding Fathers Exhibit hosts this monthly gathering, where they feature a special presentation of their jaw-dropping exhibit followed by a tasty dinner at Colonial House in Rapid City, with a conversation centered on colonial life. Museum Day at the Museum of Geology

What better way to pass a cold fall day than spending an enriching afternoon exploring a museum? It may not be all that chilly yet, but you can still take part in the celebration of Museum Day at the Museum of Geology, located on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology campus. While entrance into the museum is always free and open to the public, during the event their Paleontology collections will also be opened for free, guided tours.  Stop by the museum on September 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to get up close and personal with a variety of fossils and see how they are cared for. Fall Colors Art Studio Tour

Presented by the Fall Colors Art Studio Tour Committee and supported in part by the Rapid City Arts Council, the Fall Colors Art Tour allows the public a unique peek into the studio of local artists. The tour is free, self-guided, and gives visitors the opportunity to buy quality artwork directly from each artist.

This event takes place Saturday, September 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Learn more about the tour and view maps detailing studio locations here.

 Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival

Celebrate all things autumn at the 10th annual Great Downtown Pumpkin Festival, held on September 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Main Street Square, Rapid City. With entertaining fall-themed activities like a pumpkin weigh-off, pumpkin catapult and pony rides extending from the Square to Memorial Park, there is plenty of fun to be had by the entire family. There will also be vendors located throughout the festival offering up tasty food and drink, as well as a downtown pub crawl held for those over 21. Join in on Germany’s Oktoberfest celebration right here in Rapid City at Main Street Square’s 8th annual Bierbörse, held on Saturday, October 6 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.  This free event is open to all ages, although you must present an ID to try the wide selection of local microbrews that will be available.
